WordPress Sites Under Attack

imagesThere is currently a very large, ongoing attack against WordPress websites.  It’s been going on for a while now, but has severely escalated in the last week.

Basically there are illegal “bots” (or computers) that are attempting to brute force attack WordPress websites.  What this means is they have a computer setup to attempt to login to WordPress sites.  Brute force just means that it will sit there and keep trying usernames and passwords, hundreds per minute until it figures out how to get in.

If you use a very easy password, this won’t take long – if you have a complex password it may take them a long time, or be nearly impossible.   If you missed my recent blog about password security check it out.

If you have a WordPress site, what can you do?  There’s a free plugin called “Limit Login Attempts” which will track failed login attempts and if there are a certain number of failed login attempts (4 or 5) in a short period of time, it will block the IP address for 24 hours.  You’ll also  want to make sure that you’re as up to date as possible, including your WordPress core and plugins.  You also want to be sure you’re doing regular backups of your site.  I recommend Backup Buddy plugin for that.

If you’re an active client of mine, then I’ve already taken care of that.  If you’ve got a WordPress site and you’d like some help hardening up the security, please let me know – that is a service I can most certainly provide.  Please feel free to contact me if you need assistance.

Why are WordPress sites under attack? It’s a “free” blog/content management platform, does this mean it’s insecure?  Absolutely not, I’ve gone through a lot of WordPress training in the last few months, it’s a VERY secure system.  But it’s also VERY common.  Over 80 million websites.  1 in 5 new websites are using it.  So if you’re going to hack something, and it’s a gamble about who you might be able to hack, you might as well go for what’s most common, to gain the most results.  And that’s why they target popular software.

Disappointed in Google

Despite Google being known for being very far-left progressive, I’ve always valued them as being a superior search engine and offering a great suite of web tools.  And in the business I’m in, sadly I will always need to work with Google to some degree.   The runner up search engine in my opinion is Bing, and I haven’t liked using them, simply because, being an Apple user, I’m just not a big Microsoft fan.

I am a strong Christian and value Easter being one of the holiest of days.  I was saddened to see that while Google seems to recognize every fun and obscure holiday with their Doodles (Google Logo that changes), on Easter Sunday morning, they had their home page devoted to the birthday of Cesar Chavez, the co-founder of the United Farm Workers union.

While I understand that Google is a private company and can do whatever they want with their logo (bring on free speech) I’m disappointed that their argument is that they use their logo to commemorate historical figures and important events.  Hrm… one would think that the mass of their user base might consider Jesus and Easter a more significant public figure and historical event than communist Cesar Chavez.   Heck, even if you want to just celebrate the secular side and make your “o’s” in your logo into Easter eggs and put a bunny on top, I think that would be more in tune with what a majority of their users were celebrating in some way on that particular morning.

While Easter is not about eggs or candy, I did appreciate that Bing had an Easter themed home page.

So this long time Google Searcher has begun to use Bing for Searches.  Bill Gates is an openly declared athiest, but at least he didn’t celebrate a communist’s birthday on the most holy of Christian holidays.

Passwords and Security

Alot of my clients ask about security of their sites and their accounts.  I recently had the opportunity to attend WordCamp in Atlanta, which was development training for the WordPress software.  While there, I also took a general security class, as it’s important to remain up to date on new security trends as well as what the hackers are doing these days – since as developers we always have to be one step ahead of them.

One element of that class was password tricks.  By now, many of you know not to use “dictionary words” as your password, and many people use a word comprised of letters and numbers.  For example “Tr0ub4dor” (note we are using the zero as an “O” and the 4 as an “A”.  However the hackers have become much more sophisticated.  A password like that, while it looks complex, and undoubtedly may even be difficult for you to remember, can be hacked by an automatic program in just 3 days.

The new trend in passwords is to use a phrase.  For example, “CorrectHorseBatteryStaple”.   This looks silly of course, although it just may be silly enough for you to be able to remember it.  However a pass phrase such as that, takes the same automatic program 5 years to crack. Even longer if you throw in a number or special character, something like “BlueSource2WebStarfish” or “Normal@MediaRelief”.

Now it’s suggested that your “phrase” not be common.  For example, don’t use “NissanUltima” as it’s a common phrase, instead use “CarMy03BlueNissan”.

Hope this helps you remain more secure in your online lives!

Trans-D Tropin

I’ve had the good fortune over the past 5 years or working closely with Dr. Rashid A. Buttar, working on his various special projects, websites and product launches. One of the most amazing products I’ve been able to try, is something called Trans-D Tropin.

It’s a product that helps your body produce it’s own natural human growth hormone.  There’s lots of controversy about Human Growth Hormone Injection, because it can increase your risks for cancer.  However because this is natural and stimulates your body to generate only the hormones it needs, it’s perfectly safe.

While taking this product, I’ve noticed a great increase in energy and less aches and pains.  The biggest benefit I’ve noticed is increased quality of sleep.  I have such vivid dreams, which I can actually remember when I wake up!

Coke vs. Water

I LOVE Coke.  I often use Caffeine so that I can stay up later, have more energy and get more stuff done.   However, I know Soda is Bad for me.  Recent stress and workload had me at an all time high for Coke consumption. Not to mention I’ve begun to pack on the pounds.   So I decided to give up Soda for Lent.  I had never given up anything for lent before. But I am proud to say I managed to resist all temptations for Soda during Lent.   I did learn that Sunday’s don’t count in the 40 days of Lent, so you can actually have the item you gave up for Lent on Sunday, but again, I am proud to say I didn’t even do that.

I did substitute with a few Sweet Teas, although I have tried to resist those as much as possible. And I’ve also drank pure and flavored carbonated water, or Perrier water mixed with a little bit of fruit juice.  I also learned that Ocean Spray’s Cran-Cherry + Perrier is fairly close to a Dr. Pepper!

Easter has come and gone, and Lent has passed.  I actually feel better not drinking Coke and have lost about 5 lbs.  I’ve had only one Coke since Easter.  I enjoyed it, although I didn’t go overboard with it. (Just one 12 oz cup and didn’t refill my glass).

A dear friend shared with me a document titled “Coke vs. Water” and it was enough to give me a little encouragement to continue my resistance of soda.  I wanted to share that document here:

The Cobbler’s Children Have No Shoes

The old expression feels very current to me.  It refers to the fact that a busy cobbler will be so busy making shoes for his customers that he has no time to make some for his own children.   This has been the case with my personal website for the past few years.   I am employed as a web developer and programmer, and do freelance work for my own clients – so I do website stuff all day long.  I love what I do and love the people and clients I get to work with.

After years of my own site sitting in a state of neglect, I have finally given my site a facelift.  I have tried to showcase a sample of my recent work, along with some feedback from my clients.

If your site could use a facelift of it’s own, or if you feel your site has been neglected, please contact me and I will be glad to help out.
